2021 changes

Every year, we take a close look at our benefits program and consider changes that could better support your total well-being, while also meeting our business and health care reform obligations.

As part of our ongoing strategy to provide comprehensive and competitive benefits, we’ll be making the following changes for 2021.

Through the UltiPro online benefits platform, you’ll have access to a choice of benefits, plus tools and information to put you in charge of your health and your benefits.

Benefit What’s changing in 2021
New tiers for team member health coverage

We heard you! We’re introducing new options for family enrollment that better reflect your needs. There will be four coverage tiers: team member only, team member + spouse/domestic partner, team member + child(ren), and family.

As the overall cost of providing health benefits rises, the amount you pay for health care coverage will increase modestly. Mercury will absorb most of the cost increases. Be sure to review your rates and choose the coverage that’s right for your situation.

Save Money on 90-day Fills of Prescription Drugs With the Cigna 90 Now program, you can get 90-day fills of prescription drugs through the Cigna home delivery pharmacy, or at a retail pharmacy. You’ll save money with the 90-day fill, and you get the convenience of choosing where to get your medication.
New Kaiser Permanente Deductible HMO
(California only)
We’re introducing the Kaiser Permanente Deductible HMO for team members in California. It has lower rates and includes a deductible for emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services, while still offering set copays for most other services, including doctor visits and most prescription drugs.
Health Savings Account (HSA) You can save even more in your HSA. The IRS limit increased for 2021 to $3,600 for team member only and $7,200 for all other contribution tiers. Remember, Mercury contributes to your HSA, too!
Voluntary Benefits

We’re pleased to introduce some enhancements to your Cigna voluntary benefits!

  • Accident Insurance: You’ll pay less for coverage in 2021!
  • Critical Illness Insurance: Pre-existing conditions were previously excluded. Now, the plan will pay benefits for a covered loss caused by a pre-existing condition. Also, children can now be covered for up to 50% of your benefit amount (previous limit was 25%). Your annual health screening benefit is also expanded! You can get $50 for a wellness treatment, health screening test, or preventive care benefit.
  • Hospital Indemnity Insurance: We’re eliminating the 30-day benefit waiting period.
Increased Short-term Disability Benefit (outside California only) We’re increasing the maximum short-term disability benefit for team members outside of California to $1,300 per week, for a maximum of 25 weeks. Note: team members in California have access to state disability insurance.

When you’re first eligible

During Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment occurs during the fall each year. Benefits elected during Open Enrollment will become effective on January 1 of the following year.

When Coverage Begins

Benefits elected when you’re first eligible will be effective on the 1st of the month following hire, or, if you’re hired on the 1st of the month, benefits that you’re automatically enrolled in will become effective immediately. Benefits elected during Open Enrollment will become effective on January 1 of the following year.

After a Qualified Life Event

During the year, you can only change your benefits when you experience a qualified life event. Qualified life events include:

  • Marriage, divorce, or legal separation
  • Addition of eligible domestic partner, or termination of domestic partnership
  • Birth or adoption
  • A dependent becomes ineligible for coverage elsewhere
  • Death of your covered spouse/domestic partner or one of your children
  • Change in work status for you or your spouse/domestic partner.

If you experience a qualified life event and would like to change your coverage, you must make the change within 30 days of the event. You must provide necessary documentation when applicable (for example, a marriage certificate, birth certificate, or proof of loss of coverage).

If you fail to make a change within 30 days of a qualified life event, you won’t be eligible to make a change until the next Open Enrollment period, unless you experience another qualified life event.

Decision support

Choosing the right plans is important for both your health and your financial well-being. These resources will help you understand your options and select the ones that provide the right coverage and value for you and your family.

Your enrollment checklist

Use this checklist to make the most of your Open Enrollment opportunity:

  • Learn about your benefit options, paying special attention to the changes coming next year.
  • Think about your coverage needs, including how much health care you anticipate needing and whether one of the Cigna supplemental health plans is right for you.
  • Make sure your dependent information is correct and all your dependents are still eligible.
  • Update your FSA enrollment and/or HSA contribution amount — they don’t carry over to the next year.
  • Review your beneficiaries — it’s a good idea to review your beneficiary information (especially if your personal circumstances have changed) and make updates as needed.
  • Complete your benefits enrollment by November 20.

You must enroll by November 20 if you want Mercury medical, dental, and vision coverage on January 1!

TIP: Think about the whole cost.

When choosing a medical plan, it’s important to think about the whole cost of coverage — the amount you’ll spend out of your paycheck, as well as out of your pocket (copays, deductibles, and coinsurance).
